When to Replace Your Furnace: 7 Signs It's Time

Your furnace is one of the most important appliances in your Toronto home. But how do you know when it's time to stop repairing and start shopping for a replacement? Here are seven signs that your furnace may be nearing the end of its life.

1. Your Furnace Is Over 15 Years Old

The average furnace lasts 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. If yours is approaching or past that range, it's operating on borrowed time. Older furnaces are also far less efficient than modern models, costing you more on every heating bill.

2. Your Energy Bills Keep Rising

If your heating costs have been climbing steadily even though your usage hasn't changed, your furnace may be losing efficiency. Modern high-efficiency furnaces (96–98% AFUE) can cut your heating costs significantly compared to an older 80% AFUE unit.

3. Repairs Are Becoming Frequent

The occasional repair is normal. But if you're calling a technician multiple times per season, those costs add up fast. A good rule of thumb: if a repair costs more than 50% of a new furnace, it's time to replace.

4. Uneven Heating Throughout Your Home

If some rooms are too hot while others stay cold, your furnace may be struggling to distribute heat evenly. This can indicate a failing blower motor, ductwork issues, or a furnace that's simply too worn to do its job properly.

5. Strange Noises

Banging, popping, rattling, or squealing noises from your furnace are warning signs. While some noises can be fixed with a simple repair, persistent or worsening sounds often indicate components that are wearing out.

6. Yellow Burner Flame

A healthy furnace flame should be blue. If you see a yellow or flickering flame, it could indicate a carbon monoxide issue — a serious safety concern. Have your furnace inspected immediately.

7. Excessive Dust or Dry Air

An aging furnace can struggle to properly filter and humidify the air, leading to more dust in your home and uncomfortably dry air during winter.
